This site hits close to (our digital) home. Last week, our Associate Editor, Sharon, was concerned when her puppy (who you can follow on Twitter) ate a tube of lip balm. Not knowing what to do, she headed towards the vet, but on the way, encountered another pet owner who assured her that everything was fine and to spare herself the expensive trip. Alas, all of that could have been avoided had she known about a site that hit our inbox this afternoon: VetHelpDirect.

The site is essentially a WebMD for pets, allowing you to check your pet’s symptoms, answer interactive questions, perform other tests on your animal, and ultimately be advised as to what’s wrong with your pet and whether or not you should take it to the vet. VetHelpDirect not only has these options for dogs and cats, but today, added less common pets like reptiles, birds, and even donkeys.

Since going to the vet can be expensive, VetHelpDirect also offers the option to search for pet insurance, an increasingly popular option amongst pet owners. There’s also a vet search, though this is only offered in the UK at the moment – a US version is in the works. And in case you’re worried about the accuracy of the data, all of it was created by a team of registered veterinarians.

Bottom line: cool idea that can save pet owners a lot of stress and some money.
